pForth for OpenVMS VAX -- sources and provenance
=================================================

Program pForth 2.0.1 (its banner says "PForth V2.0.0": upstream tag v2.0.1 still has
PFORTH_VERSION_NAME "2.0.0" in csrc/pf_guts.h; the source built is the v2.0.1 tag), "a portable ANS-like Forth
written in ANSI C", by Phil Burk, with Larry Polansky, David Rosenboom and Darren
Gibbs; support for 64-bit cells by Aleksej Saushev.

             tag v2.0.1, commit 3956a7fd77845a04006973a7ba97a4b65d437e7e (9-JAN-2023, the newest
             release on 15-OCT-2026)
             139,439 bytes, SHA-256 f4c417d7d1f2c187716263484bdc534d3224b6d159e049d00828a89fa5d6894d

Changes made for VMS (five patches, each in its own file, all small; the rest is unchanged):
01-no-stdint.diff pforth.h: PF_NO_STDINT supplies the integer types (DEC C 6.4 for VAX has no
<stdint.h> and no 64 bit integer type)
  02-system-word.diff pfcustom.c: new words SYSTEM ( c-addr u -- n ), CLOCK, CLOCKS/SEC
03-stdio-sleep.diff stdio/pf_io_stdio.c: sdSleepMillis() for the "stdio" platform (upstream does
not define it there, so that platform did not link); VMS uses LIB$WAIT
04-no-round.diff pf_float.h: fp_round() without the C99 round(), which the VAX C library lacks
05-no-shrink-file.diff stdio/pf_fileio_stdio.c: RESIZE-FILE to a smaller size reports an error
(freopen(NULL, ...) crashes the DEC C run-time library on VAX)
BUILD_PFORTH.COM new: the build procedure (CC, LINK, dictionary)

The patches (as .DIF files) and BUILD_PFORTH.COM are in [.DOC] of the installed kit.

Fig-Forth (if the kit includes [.FIG]): VAX-11 fig-Forth Version 2.0 by Rodrick A. Eldridge for the
Central Iowa Forth Interest Group (CIFIG), Iowa State University, 1985; "public domain", further
distribution must include its notices (they are in the MACRO source and FIGFORTH.MEM). Built unchanged
with MACRO and LINK from FGFORTHV2.MAR (renamed FIGFORTHV2.MAR as the archive's own AAARENAME.COM does),
from the DECUS VAX85 symposium collection (vax85d/forth). SHA-256 of the files used:

Build: 15 modules with DEC C 6.4 on a VAXstation 4000/90 (OpenVMS VAX 7.3), /FLOAT=G_FLOAT,
about 1 min 10 s, then the dictionary with "PFORTH -i system.fth" (7 s). Sources, patches and
the recipe with hashes are in the distribution this kit came with.

Kit: Douglas P. Fields, Jr. (symbolics@lisp.engineer), 15-OCT-2026.
