Icon 9.0 for OpenVMS VAX 7.3 -- source kit, 12-OCT-2026
=======================================================

Douglas P. Fields, Jr. (symbolics@lisp.engineer)

Everything needed to rebuild the binary kit ICON_VAX_20261011.BCK: the Icon
Project's distribution as shipped, where it came from with hashes, our
changes (whole files and diffs), the build, kit and test procedures, the
host-side tools, and the recipe.

1. CONTENTS

REBUILD.md The recipe, step by step, with commands, expected
                          results and measured times.
  original/vms_icon_v9.zip
The Icon Project's VMS distribution, unmodified:
                          DECUS LT94B, 4-AUG-1994, 5,756,928 bytes. It holds
                          the BACKUP saveset vms_icon_v9.bck (21,807,104
                          bytes, 1,542 files, 35,207 blocks).
sources/README.md Provenance, licence, every difference from the
                          distribution, the host tools.
sources/ARCHIVES.SHA256 SHA-256 of the archives. (The paths in it are those
                          of my machine.)
sources/FILES.SHA256 SHA-256 of each of the 1,485 files of the saveset
as extracted on a Linux host.
  sources/V9_SAVESET_LIST.TXT
                          The saveset's file list.
sources/v9-original/ The shipped text of the top of the tree, byte for
byte: README., STATUS., the top-level *.COM,
                          bin/*.com, src/ (all C, headers, run-time .r
files, build procedures) and four documents. The
ten binary directory files (*.dir) the saveset
holds are left out. The program library, the
tests and the other documents are in the archive.
sources/patched/ The whole of each file we changed, as built.
sources/patches/ The same changes as unified diffs: 01-04. Change 00
(one deleted line of src/h/define.h) is made by
                          build/PREPARE_ICON.COM.
  build/ PREPARE_ICON.COM, APPLY_PATCHES.COM, BUILD_ICON.COM
(the Icon build with the right compiler flags),
UNBUNDLE.COM and ICON_PATCHED.BUN (our five files
as a text bundle, which needs no FTP to the VAX),
                          RUN_MAKE_KIT.COM, RUN_LIFECYCLE.COM.
  tools/ Host-side: build_vmsbackup.sh and
                          vmsbackup-blocksize.diff (DECUS vmsbackup 4.1,
with one change so that it reads a saveset written
                          with /BLOCK_SIZE=8192), icbundle.py (makes the
                          text bundle).
kit/ MAKE_KIT.COM (builds the saveset), the installer,
                          uninstaller and setup procedure, LIFECYCLE_TEST.COM,
the installed README.TXT and SOURCES.TXT, the
BACKUP/LIST of the saveset and its install
                          manifest.
SHA256SUMS.TXT SHA-256 of every file in this kit.

2. LICENCE

Icon is in the public domain, in the Icon Project's words (README., top of
the tree, quoted in sources/README.md): "You may use and copy this material
freely. This privilege extends to modifications, although any modified
version of this system given to a third party should clearly identify your
modifications as well as the original source." What we changed is listed in
sources/README.md and kit/SOURCES.TXT and is ours.

The host tool vmsbackup 4.1 (DECUS free-VMS) carries no licence text and is
not included: only the one-line diff and the script that builds it from the
DECUS tar file, which are mine.
