ICON 9.0 FOR OPENVMS VAX
========================

What this is
  The Icon programming language, Version 9.0, University of Arizona (the Icon
  Project: Ralph E. Griswold, Clinton L. Jeffery, Gregg M. Townsend,
  Sandra L. Miller and others), VMS distribution of July 1994, rebuilt on
  OpenVMS VAX V7.3 with Compaq C V6.4 (VAX C mode) without graphics.
  ICONT translates, ICONX runs the result (the interpreter). ICONC is the
  compiler (Icon to C to native image). The Icon program library (IPL) is
  included, translated.

  Icon is in the public domain; see DOC (README.). Changes made for this kit
  are listed in SOURCES.TXT and are ours, not the Icon Project's.

Use
  $ @SYS$COMMON:[SYSLIB.ICON]ICON_SETUP              ! once per login
  $ ICONT HELLO                                       ! HELLO.ICN -> HELLO.ICX
  $ ICONX HELLO ! run it
  $ ICONT -x HELLO ! translate and run
  $ ICONC HELLO                                       ! compile to HELLO.EXE
  $ HELP ICONT ! the distribution's help (ICONX, ICONC)

  * Options come before file names: ICONT [options] files [-x arguments].
  * IPATH names the directories searched for LINK declarations; ICON_SETUP
    puts the program library there ([.IPL]: "link strings, numbers").
  * ICONX reads standard input as SYS$INPUT and writes SYS$OUTPUT; define them
    with DEFINE/USER, or give "<file" and ">file" arguments (quoted in DCL).
  * system(s) runs a DCL command; open(s, "rp") reads a command's output;
    open(s, "wp") writes to a command. getenv(s) translates a logical name.
  * callout(name, args...) calls the system services in [SRC.VMS]VMSCALL.C:
    callout("vms_getjpi", "USERNAME"), ("vms_getsyi", "NODENAME"),
    ("vms_trnlnm", "SYS$LOGIN"), ("vms_time"), ("vms_getmsg", 36).
  * Not built: the X Window graphics facilities (the sources are in SRC, with
    the one line "#define Graphics 1" removed from [SRC.H]DEFINE.H).
