NetHack 3.4.3 for OpenVMS VAX 7.3 -- kit NETHACK_VAX_343 ======================================================= NetHack 3.4.3 (7-DEC-2003) built, unmodified except for one configuration setting (the playground directory in vmsconf.h), from the official source with the distribution's own VMS procedures and DEC C 6.4. Prepared by Douglas P. Fields, Jr. (symbolics@lisp.engineer). Licence: NetHack General Public License (LICENSE.TXT). Provenance: SOURCES.TXT. Install (as SYSTEM; no privileges are granted to the game, nothing outside the tree changes) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- $ SET DEFAULT dir-holding-the-kit-files $ @NETHACK_INSTALL (installs NETHACK_VAX_343.BCK) $ @NETHACK_INSTALL "" REPLACE (removes the old installation first, keeps scores/saves) $ @NETHACK_UNINSTALL [CHECK] (removes only what the manifest recorded; CHECK = dry run) What goes where --------------- SYS$COMMON:[SYSLIB.NETHACK] program, data library NH-DATA.DLB, NETHACK.COM, TERMCAP, RECOVER.EXE, GUIDEBOOK.DOC, NETHACK_SETUP.COM, manifest SYS$COMMON:[SYSLIB.NETHACK.SAVE] saved games Play (any user, any VT100/VT200-class terminal, including Telnet) ------------------------------------------------------------------ $ @SYS$COMMON:[SYSLIB.NETHACK]NETHACK_SETUP $ NETHACK (a new game; S saves and leaves; run NETHACK to restore) $ NETHACK "-s" (the score list) $ RECOVER (rebuild a save from the level files of a crashed game) Quote options; DCL upper-cases an unquoted argument ("-uConan-B" not -uConan-B). The distribution's NETHACK.COM turns DECgraphics on for DEC terminals. Options for every game: $ DEFINE NETHACKOPTIONS "noLegacy,!autopickup" (or a file SYS$LOGIN:NETHACK.INI with lines OPTIONS=...). Wizard mode is off: the compiled-in wizard user NHWIZARD does not exist. Security of this installation (read it) --------------------------------------- NetHack is installed WITHOUT privileges and without INSTALL: every player runs the program with his own rights. The playground must therefore be writable by every player (world RWE). What the installer does to keep players apart: * an inheritable ACE (IDENTIFIER=[*,*],OPTIONS=DEFAULT,ACCESS=NONE) on the playground and on [.SAVE]: every file a player creates (level files, lock file, save file, bones) is private to that player (and SYSTEM) -- another user gets a protection violation when trying to read, copy, delete, rename, change the protection of, append to, or make a new version of it; * the program and data files are owned by SYSTEM, world read/execute only. What it cannot do without privileges: * RECORD, LOGFILE, PERM and PANICLOG are shared by all players and are world read/write (they must be, to be appended to). ANY LOCAL USER CAN THEREFORE EDIT OR DELETE THE SCORE LIST. Closing that needs an installed image holding an identifier (INSTALL, CMKRNL, a startup entry); this kit does not do that. * Bones files are private too, so a dead player's ghost is never met by another player. * Anyone can still fill the directory with files of their own (disk quota is the only limit).
