REXX (Regina 3.3) for OpenVMS VAX 7.3 -- examples and tests, 12-OCT-2026
========================================================================

Douglas P. Fields, Jr. (symbolics@lisp.engineer)

Eleven programs and three more checks with a DCL test, and the oracle test
that compares the REXX F$ functions with DCL's own. The same files are
installed with the kit in SYS$COMMON:[SYSLIB.REXX.EXAMPLES]; this archive is
for reading them without installing.

Send every file as TEXT (FTP "ascii"). Put them all in one directory on the
VAX (a flat directory: the test procedures find the programs and the
expected output beside themselves), then, as an ordinary user:

  $ @SYS$COMMON:[SYSLIB.REXX]REXX_SETUP
  $ @RUN_TESTS          ! PASS 14 of 14
  $ @RUN_ORACLE         ! PASS 128 of 128

Both build in a private subdirectory of SYS$SCRATCH and delete it again.
The expected files were written by independent Python code
(examples/make_expected.py) or by DCL itself, not by the REXX programs.

examples/
  QUEENS.REX     N queens, N = 4 to 8: a procedure and stems.
  PRIMES.REX     A sieve; exact 40! and 2**200, fib(200), square root and
                 e to 30 digits.
  WORDFREQ.REX, WORDFREQ_IN.TXT
                 PARSE, TRANSLATE, stems as tables.
  ROMAN.REX      Roman numerals both ways.
  DATES.REX      DATE('B') and week days.
  DIRTABLE.REX   F$SEARCH, F$PARSE, F$FILE_ATTRIBUTES; the blocks are
                 checked against DIRECTORY/SIZE.
  LOGLIST.REX    A search-list logical name walked with F$TRNLNM.
  SYMBOLS.REX Local and global symbols and a logical name, set from
                 REXX and read by DCL.
  CAPTURE.REX Command output into a stem and onto the stack, a command
                 fed from a stem, a failing command's condition value.
  DCLCALL.REX, DCLCALL.COM, CALLEE.REX
                 REXX running a command procedure and using its status;
                 DCL running REXX and decoding $STATUS.
  SYSREPORT.REX, SYSREPORT.COM
                 A system and process report, compared with the same report
                 written in DCL.
  HERO.REX The program in the picture of the post.
  ORACLE.REX, ORACLE.COM, RUN_ORACLE.COM
                 128 tag=value lines from DCL lexical functions and from the
                 REXX built-ins, compared.
  *_EXP.TXT      Expected output.
  RUN_TESTS.COM  The test procedure.
  make_expected.py
                 Host-side Python 3 that computes the expected files.
