SNOBOL4 (CSNOBOL4 0.99.4) FOR OPENVMS VAX
=========================================

What this is
  SNOBOL4, the string-processing language of Bell Telephone Laboratories
  (Griswold, Poage and Polonsky; the Macro Implementation in SIL, version
  3.11), as translated to C by Philip L. Budne ("C-MAINBOL", later CSNOBOL4),
  version 0.99.4 of 11-AUG-1997, built on OpenVMS VAX V7.3 with Compaq C V6.4.
  It is not Macro SPITBOL, but it has the SPITBOL extensions Budne added
  (HOST, EXIT, case folding, -INCLUDE ...). Public domain; see DOC (README.).
  Changes made for this kit are listed in SOURCES.TXT and are ours.

  Added for OpenVMS: GETJPI, GETSYI, GETDVI, TRNLNM, GETTIM, WAIT, VMSMSG,
  VMSSTATUS, FINDFIRST/FINDNEXT and an RMS indexed-file interface RMSOPEN,
  RMSPUT, RMSGET, RMSDEL, RMSREWIND, RMSNEXT, RMSCLOSE (see SRC.LIB.VMS]
  VMSCALL.C for the specification).  Pipes work: INPUT(.V, 99, , '|SHOW TIME').

Use
  $ @SYS$COMMON:[SYSLIB.SNOBOL]SNOBOL4_SETUP         ! once per login
  $ SNOBOL4 "-b" HELLO.SNO                            ! run a program
  $ SNOBOL4 "-b" "-u" "argument" PROG.SNO "<in" ">out"
  $ SNOBOL4 "-h"                                      ! all options

  * DCL lower-cases an unquoted argument and SNOBOL4's options are case
    sensitive, so quote them. "-b" suppresses the banner; "-u" passes a
    parameter string (HOST(0)); "<file" and ">file" redirect INPUT and
    OUTPUT; "-r" reads INPUT from after the END statement; -INCLUDE finds
    its files in the current directory and then in SNOLIB: (the [.SNOLIB]
    directory of the kit, a logical name set by SNOBOL4_SETUP).
  * DEFINE/USER SYS$OUTPUT file works as well as ">file".
  * LOAD() of shared images is not available on VMS; external functions are
    linked in (doc "load.doc", "Poor Man's LOAD"; pml.h).
  * The language is as in the book "The SNOBOL4 Programming Language" (the
    "green book"); [DOC]SNOBOL4.0 is the manual page of this implementation
    and lists its extensions.

  [DOC] the distribution's documents (README., CHANGES., SNOBOL4.0,

  [SNOLIB] library files for -INCLUDE: VMSLIB.SNO, BQ.SNO
  [SRC] the interpreter's sources as built (with our changes), the
                build procedures BUILD_SNOBOL.COM and BUILD_SNOBOL.LIS, and
                the shipped regression tests in [SRC.TEST]
  [EXAMPLES] example programs and their tests: @RUN_TESTS

Examples
  $ @SYS$COMMON:[SYSLIB.SNOBOL.EXAMPLES]RUN_TESTS     ! runs and checks them
  The 64 regression tests that came with the sources write files, so run
  them in a copy of the test directory:
  $ CREATE/DIRECTORY [.SNTEST]
  $ COPY SYS$COMMON:[SYSLIB.SNOBOL.SRC.TEST]*.*;* [.SNTEST]
  $ @SYS$COMMON:[SYSLIB.SNOBOL.SRC]RUN_SHIPPED_TESTS SNOBOL4_BIN:SNOBOL4.EXE [.SNTEST]

Remove
  $ @SNOBOL4_UNINSTALL (from the kit directory; as SYSTEM)

This kit changes no system file, no startup file, no SYSUAF and not STARLET.
